Sgraffito is an intricate design or line drawing, which is drawn into the dried egg tempera paint surface, revealing the water gilded surface underneath. The gilded surface is painted with a hand made egg tempera paint and once it dries, patterns are scraped and drawn into the surface allowing the gilded surface to show through. Fabulous effects are created which give another dimension and detail to a gilded surface.
Often this technique was used in Renaissance panel painting. This is a great technique to use on reproduction frames and furniture as well as on fine art. The variables are endless with these mediums and students are encouraged to think outside of the box.

Materials fee: $160.00 - including a gilded Florentine frame I.D. 8”x10” OR students may bring their own gilded Florentine frame to class and they will not need to pay this fee.

Teaching gilding has been part of her resume since the 90’s including as an adjunct professor. Jill loves sharing her passion for the gilding arts with open minded students.
