Florentine Gilding (Advanced)

Introduction and Pastiglia Technique - Gilding, Burnishing and Egg Tempera on Gold - Sgraffito, Incising, Shell Gold - Punch Work (Bulinatura) and Finishing

The objective of these classes are to teach the following decorative techniques for the water gilded surface: Pastiglia (raised gesso), Sgraffito (scratching through egg tempera paint to reveal the gilded surface), punch work and incising. The class project incorporates all the techniques combined in a small chinoiserie style ornamental panel.

The class is virtual and is comprised of a series of pre-recorded videos plus 2 live zoom lessons.

Requirements:

-a basic level of water gilding
- students must acquire their own supplies (supply list available upon registration).

Zoom Lessons:

Part one: Introduction, making gesso, making pastiglia (2 hours)

Part two: Egg tempera, sgraffito technique, punching and incising, finishing (2 hours)

Alison Woolley is the owner of FlorenceArt.Net studio. She is a master artisan recognised by the region of Tuscany. Alison started her career as an apprentice in a traditional Florentine ‘bottega’ decorating furniture in the Renaissance style. Over the years this specialised work blossomed into an expertise in creating luxuriously decorated surfaces of many kinds, from interior murals to harpsichord decoration. Alison has been teaching for many years and enjoys sharing her extensive knowledge of traditional decorative techniques.
